Face Lift - Case 1: Face Lift combined with Laser Surgery

"I did this for myself" Robin was ready to have cosmetic surgery. It was something she’d wanted to do for herself for some time. In the process of getting ready for surgery she underwent some routine pre-operative tests. The tests revealed that Robin had a cancerous lung, so instead of the cosmetic surgery improvements she’d planned on, Robin had to have her right lung removed.

Robin says, "I had four surgeries in 1994. In the last two I had an aneurysm behind both eyes and they had to take my skull all apart to clip the aneurysms. When they put my forehead back together, they put all these screws and plates in my head." The neurosurgeries also left a dent in her left temple. After getting through those four major surgeries, Robin was ready again to try cosmetic surgery.

She went to Thomas H. Faerber, M.D., a metro-area cosmetic surgeon. She says, "I kept reading medical columns in the Kansas City Star and I liked what I read about him. I’m glad I chose him. He’s a very caring physician. Dr. Faerber and his staff are fantastic people."

Dr. Faerber says after Robin survived four major life-threatening surgeries, she wanted some rejuvenation. "One of her complaints was all the hardware in her forehead. There were numerous little screws all over her forehead that bothered her because she could feel them." We performed multiple procedures at the same time: Forehead lift to raise her brows. Removed the screws and bone plates. Performed a face lift to tighten her jowls. She also had Laser skin resurfacing.

"The face lift doesn’t smooth the fine wrinkles around the brows, eyes, mouth and cheeks. The laser helps that, and can be done right at the same time."

One advantage to the healing process was having several procedures done at once, rather than numerous separate surgeries. Robin experienced minimal pain and bruising. "I just swelled up for a couple of days," she says. "My husband was my nurse during my recovery. He put all the cold packs on my face and did everything for me. I couldn’t have done it without him."

Robin, who was 68, says she had wanted the surgery more than three years ago so that she could look as young as she felt. "I always looked like I was tired. I didn’t have any trouble with the medical surgeries. I came through them just fine, but they made me appear older. My husband couldn’t see why I wanted to have cosmetic surgery, but every time I looked in the mirror all I could see was this old wrinkled woman. In my pictures I looked about 90."

Dr. Faerber is pleased with Robin’s results. "We received clearance from her primary care doctors prior to surgery, so it was very safe and she did great. It shows the amazing things that are being done on both sides in primary care medicine and cosmetic medicine. She’s a strong person and wanted to put her best foot forward. There’s no reason she can’t live a long time and enjoy the benefits of her cosmetic surgery. It’s heartwarming to be able to help somebody like that. It’s exciting for me."

Robin is pleased too. "It shows what you can do if you’re determined and you want to do it. I did this for myself. After all that I’ve been through, my husband tells me he does like the results. I do look like a different person and I feel like a different person. Now every day I look in the mirror to see if I still look the same….and I do. I feel great about what Dr. Faerber did for me."
